Letter to the Editor: Dems Delivers Responsible Financial Management in Coventry | Letters to the Editor

Some signs posted in Coventry imply that Republicans are the party for you if your concern is taxation.

History, however, shows that the Democrats in Coventry have an excellent track record when it comes to controlling fiscal growth and financial stability.

Under Republican leadership, the current city council’s tax cut was funded by taking $ 310,000 for the 2020-21 budget and $ 200,000 for the 2021-22 budget from the fund balance, regardless of council policy. which states that “the balance of non-designated funds will not be used to offset increases in taxes if the balance is less than 15% of the adopted budget” (the percentage was 13.7 when first used).

No city council has used the fund balance for a budget since 2008. Under 2017-2019 Democratic leadership, the fund balance fell from 11.9% to 13.7%, increasing our bond rating.

Using the fund balance as income means that the income must be replaced the following year, resulting in cuts to programs. A small portion of the $ 310,000 raised was clawed back this year, but Republicans again violated council policy by using an additional $ 200,000 from the fund balance as income, meaning budget deliberations for 2022 begin with a income deficit.

To ensure that Coventry enjoys strategic and responsible fiscal management, I urge voters to vote for the Democrats list.

The writer is a former president of the Democratic city council.
